Mark Day proves you don't always have to be fastest to win at Huntsville Speedway

Article by Ronnie White | Photo by Chuck Chamblee

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Mark Day proved Sunday night the fastest car doesn't always win the race at Huntsville Speedway.

The Clarksville, Tenn., driver took home the Southern Superstars 100-lap trophy even though he was nowhere near the fastest car in the race.

That title belong to Brad Lemley, who led the most laps and looked like he had his car on a string, but the string broke on the 82nd lap when Lemley tried  put Chase Oliver down a lap and got into the rear of Oliver's car bringing out the caution.

Under Superstars rules, when a car takes out another car, both cars are placed in the rear of the cars on the lead lap. Lemley was forced to start in seventh place, but he ran out of laps.

"I rather be lucky than good," Day said. "Something was bad wrong with this race car. Something wasn't right in the front of the car. Brad was really fast, but that's way it goes."

Lemley didn't feel the same way.

"I guess the officials wanted to make a show out of it," Lemley said. "The flagman was giving the move-over flag, but they wouldn't move over. My car was a rocketship. I had trouble all night with the lap cars. At least the car is in one piece."

Finishing behind Day and Lemley were Keith Cahela, Clay Alexander and Phil Renfore.
"I burnt my tires up trying to catch Brad," Lemley said. "I was just too loose."

David Ragan Captures "Georgia Best Chevy Dealers 150" at Atlanta Motor Speedway

From Atlanta Motor Speedway website

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and Georgia-native David Ragan claimed victory in the Your Georgia Best Chevy Dealers 150 on Friday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his first win at the track since his days as a youth racing Legends cars.

Ragan led 129-of-150 laps to capture a dominating victory in the super late model race on Atlanta Motor Speedway's quarter-mile "Thunder Ring," located on the track's front stretch. Ragan, a native of Unadilla, exuberantly climbed from the car to a roaring hometown crowd to celebrate.

"I knew we would have to pass a few cars to get up there and I once I got to the lead, I was just trying to maintain my times and take care of my brakes," said Ragan. "It's an honor to win anything at a track like this. It's great to come back home to Atlanta Motor Speedway and start the weekend off good."

Ragan, who will compete at his home track in the Sunday Emory Healthcare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series night race at 7:30 p.m., last won in Atlanta in his final season racing Legends cars in 2000. The Roush Fenway NASCAR driver with nine-career Legends car wins in Atlanta won the pole for the Your Georgia Best Chevy Dealers 150, but started fifth after a field inversion.

After taking the lead on lap 14, Ragan led the race through the mid-portion of the event, when Brad Lemley suddenly closed on Ragan to snatch the advantage on lap 88. Lemley, 16th in points for the sanctioning Southern Superstars Short Track Series, immediately grew his advantage to a few car lengths, but a debris caution on lap 93 would erase Lemley's lead.

Diving to the inside on a lap 94 restart, Ragan reclaimed the lead as he, Lemley and Jeff Letson battled three-wide down the frontstretch. Contact between Letson and Lemley in Turn One would send Lemley to the fourth position, while Ragan shot ahead of Letson in second.

But just as Ragan built his lead to six car lengths, a spin would bring out another caution and regroup the field on lap 109.

Ragan again proved superior on the restart, jumping to a multi-car length lead while Letson and Lemley battled in second and third, respectively. Jockeying for position for 10 laps, Lemley finally retook third place, but the contest allowed Ragan to build an impressive 10-length lead. However, consecutive cautions on lap 127 and 129 would yet again return the leader within the reach of the field.

Again proving superior on the restart, Ragan quickly pulled away from second-place Lemley and reestablished his 10-length advantage by lap 138, but a late-race collision clustered the field for a final green, white and checkered-flag finish. Shooting ahead on the restart again, Ragan sped to the victory and celebrated in front of a hometown crowd with a frontstretch burnout.

"It's like coming back 10 or 12 years ago racing Legends stuff again," said Ragan's cousin and crew chief Brett Ragan, who drove to eight Legends wins in three Thursday Thunder seasons in Atlanta. "All in all, it was a good night and it makes it that much better to do it in Atlanta."

Night racing continues at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, as the stars of NASCAR's Nationwide Series compete under the lights in the Great Clips 300 at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's action also includes Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series qualifying, plus free fan events in the Display Lot and on the Coca-Cola Fan Stage. LETSON AND LEMLEY SPLIT TWIN-50's AT HUNTSVILLE SPEEDWAY

Article by Ronnie White, Huntsville Times Online Sports Writer | Photos by Chuck Chamblee

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Brad Lemley not only won his first Southern Superstars 50-lapper Saturday night at Huntsville Speedway, he also won a lot of respect from his fellow drivers.

Lemley dominated the second of two 50-lap Late Model features, but his second place finish in the first race drew as much attention as his win.

In the first 50-lapper, Jeff Letson continued his winning ways, giving him three straight wins on the circuit. Letson led every lap, but he had to put up with Lemley the entire race.

Glued to his bumper, Lemley had several chances to take the Harvest driver out, but the Huntsville driver drove Letson clean.

"I hope I gained a lot of respect tonight," Lemley said after his victory. "I just wanted to gain a little respect from Jeff because he would have drove me the same way."

Lemley took the lead away from Chris Whorton early in the race and then just ran away with the race.

"I had a rocketship tonight," Lemley said. "What a car. I feel like we have the best car. I felt like I have let my crew down by not winning before."

Letson's run of good luck ran out in the second feature when he elected to start on the rear for a $500 bonus. After several caution flags, Letson go caught up in an accident at the rear of the field, taking him out of the race.

"My crew never gave up," Letson said. "Ronald Grider has worked on the car  and it was strong. I had a lot of pressure on me from Brad. I've got about 10 to 15 years on him and he wore me out."

The Superstars will return to Huntsville Speedway on Sept. 5 for a 100-lapper. The next stop for the Superstars is Sept. 3 at Atlanta International Speedway.

IT'S LETSON AGAIN AT SAYRE SPEEDWAY

Article by John Stephens | Photos by Chuck Chamblee

On a very hot summer day, Jeff Letson remained as hot as the track temperature as he won his second straight Southern Superstars race at Sayre Speedway, July 31st.  During practice, track temperatures were near 130 degrees as Birmingham reached 100 degrees for a fourth straight day.  Despite the hot dry weather, twelve drivers climbed into their Super Late Models to battle it out on Sayre's quarter mile bull ring.  During qualifying, Letson again showed why he is considered one of the best Super Late Model drivers in Alabama by turning the fastest lap of 12.88. Southern Superstars Series points leader Mark Day had another solid qualifying lap as he turned in the second quickest time of 12.90.  The field was inverted by six meaning Letson and Day would have to move to the third row.  Graysville, Alabama’s own Nathan Davis who finished third during the last race at Sayre would inherit the pole in his Chevy Impala SS. To his outside would be Tyron, Georgia driver Lee Hansard  in a Chevy Monte Carlo.  Starting on the inside of the second row would be two young guns with the same first name: Chase Spradlin would be on the inside in a Chevy Monte Carlo with Chase Oliver on the outside in a Chevy Impala SS.   Occupying the third row would be the two fastest qualifiers: Mark Day would occupy the inside in a Chevy Impala SS while Jeff Letson would be to his outside in a Ford Fusion.  Row four would consist of Frankie Martin in a Dodge Charger and Bobby Castleberry in a Chevy Impala SS.  Crowd favorite Gary Sanford Jr. would occupy the inside of row five in a Chevy Impala SS with Hunter Spivey to his outside in a Chevy Impala SS.  Rounding out the field would be Jay Robinson Jr. in a Ford Fusion and Bobby Knox Jr. in a Chevy Impala SS.

Once the green flag waved, Nathan Davis lead the first eight laps on his home track.  A hard-charging Lee Hansard would make the pass and take over the lead down the backstretch on lap 8, bringing Chase Spradlin with him.  Spradlin would stay glued to the back of Hansard’s Chevy for several laps.  On lap 21, Spradlin would slip underneath Hansard as they entered turn three.  Spradlin would complete the pass, leading his first Southern Superstars race of the season.  Spradlin would set a quick pace, but his review mirror would be full of a hard-charging Mark Day and Jeff Letson.  As Day and Letson moved up to third and fourth, Day would run into the back of Hansard causing both drivers to spin out in turn four.  Letson would also get caught up in the crash as he spun trying to avoid the car of Hansard who was sitting in the outside groove.  No other cars were caught up in the crash.  Day’s Chevy suffered front-end damage which required a trip to the pits to fix.  Hansard’s Chevy suffered minor damage to the rear end, but he was able to keep going without a pit stop.

On the restart, Spradlin moved out front for several laps but finally had to relinquish the lead to Letson who appeared to have the strongest car. It would be a lead that Letson would not give up the rest of the night.  Letson’s lead grew over Day as both drivers worked their way through traffic.  As most drivers know, a comfortable lead can easily disappear on a short track in the blink of an eye.  As fate would have it, Letson’s comfortable lead would disappear on lap 88 when the Dodge Charger of Frankie Martin was hit from behind by Chase Oliver exiting turn four. Letson would need a perfect restart as Mark Day loomed large in his review mirror.  On the restart, Letson pulled away from day and coasted to his second straight 2010 Southern Superstars win.  It would also be Letson’s third career victory in four starts at Sayre.

LETSON RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE AT SAYRE SPEEDWAY

Article by John Stephens | Photos by Chuck Chamblee

Jeff Letson was able to dominate all 100 laps in the Southern Superstars Hall of Fame 100 held at Sayre Speedway Saturday night.  Thirteen Super Late Models showed up for a night of racing on Father’s Day Weekend at Sayre Speedway.  Mark Day who has won several pole awards this year was fastest in qualifying again, turning in a fast lap of 12.74 in his Scoggins Auto Parts/Whitt’s Bar-B-Q/PWR Construction/Lynch Tree Service Chevy Impala SS.  Jeff Letson was second fastest in his Performance South/Lynch Tree Service/Ron’s Insulation Ford Fusion, turning a lap of 12.81.  Chase Oliver continued on his hot streak by turning the third fastest lap of 12.85 in his Walk About Flooring/Boaz Motorsports/Little Lots/H & H Mobile Home and Land Sales/BPI Media Group Chevy Impala SS.  Chase Spradlin was the surprise, qualifying by with a lap of 13.00 in his Bobby Ray Jones Chevy Monte Carlo which was good enough to start fourth.  Nathan Davis rounded out the top five by running a fast lap of 13.03 in his Postens Overhead Doors Chevy Impala SS.

The field was inverted by three, which placed Jeff Letson on the pole. To his outside was 2009 Rookie of the Year winner Chase Oliver. Row two consisted of points leader Mark Day and Chase Spradlin.  Nathan Davis would share row three with Lee Hansard who is second in the points race.  Two drivers making their first starts this year in the Southern Superstars race would occupy row four.  Brandon Hall would start seventh, driving the Bobby Ray Jones sponsored Chevy Impala SS and to his outside in eighth was crowd favorite  and three time Birmingham Super Series Champion Gary Sanford Jr., driving the brand new Kevin Bennett Motorsports Chevy Impala SS.  Jay Robinson Jr. driving the number 522 Ford Fusion would start on the inside of row five in ninth. Bobby Castleberry would start to his outside in tenth in his Southern Air Freight/Great Southern Engineering Chevy Monte Carlo. Lonnie Watson and Nick Martin would start eleventh and twelfth.  Frankie Martin, driving the Hills Foodland/Fritz Clinic/Jones Tire and Battery was fifth fastest in qualifying would start last due to being ten pounds too light during post qualifying inspections.

Lots of fans and drivers have asked Jay Robinson Jr. about the number 522 on his Ford Fusion Race Car.  Jay Robinson Jr. explained, “My mom’s birthday is May 22. She passed away with breast cancer so, to honor her, my race car is number 522.  Every time I look at my race car I remember my mom who meant so much to me.  Every time I race I know she’s next to me."

Before the green flag could wave, Gary Sanford’s Hills Foodland/Fritz Clinic/Jones Tire and Battery Chevy Impala broke a rear end during the pace laps.  During practice, Sanford Jr. was one of the top two fastest cars until a shock mount broke and sent him to the pits for a lengthy repair.  After Sanford Jr. was pushed to the pits, the green flag waved.   Jeff Letson wasted no time jumping out front by several car lengths to show the rest of the field he was the man to beat.  Following closely in second was Chase Oliver; Mark Day was able to claim the third spot with Chase Spradlin in fourth.  Nathan Davis, racing on his home track, settled in to the fifth position.  Brandon Hall looked strong in sixth but had to battle Lee Hansard for several laps.  Hansard could not make the pass and moved into the seventh position.  Frankie Martin also looked strong as he past several cars while setting his sights on the top five.  On lap 5 Nathan Davis took away the fourth position from Chase Spradlin who looked to be very loose off of the corners.  On lap 6 Martin passed Hall and Hansard exiting turn four. On lap 8, Martin turned his attention to the fifth position, which happened to be occupied by Spradlin.  It didn’t take Martin long to make the pass as Spradlin fought his loose race car.

On lap 10, Mark Day slid past Chase Oliver to take the second position.  Day, who has visited victory lane three times already this year, looked to take away the top spot from Letson, but it would not be easy as Letson drove to a six car lengths advantage.  Chase Oliver looked like he had a car capable of winning as he stayed glued to the bumper of Day.  The field would remain the same until Bobby Casselberry’s spin off of turn two brought out the first caution on lap 16.

On lap 20, Letson again drove away from Day and Oliver, setting a super fast pace.   On lap 22, Martin nudged his Dodge Charger past Davis to make his way into the fourth position.  Davis moved into the fifth position right on the rear bumper of Martin.  The top five stayed the same way until lap 26 when Jay Robinson Jr. spun off of turn two to bring out the second caution of the race.   Robinson Jr. was able to re-fire his Ford Fusion and restart at the end of the field as the green flag waved again.  Letson once again moved away from the field, followed by Day, Oliver, Martin, and Davis. Day was able to gain some ground on Letson and moved up to Letson’s rear bumper.  Lee Hansard who came into the race second in points settled his car into the sixth position. Nathan Davis was trying to make the pass on Martin but spun off of turn two to bring out another caution.  Turn two looked to be the area where all the cars were spinning out, but track officials could not find any oil or water on the track.  Nathan Davis drove his car back around and into the pits for a quick adjustment.

On lap 44, Letson again led the field to the green flag.  Letson pulled away from day by a couple of car lengths.  Oliver continued in third followed by Martin in fourth.  Hansard looked to be getting stronger as his moved his Chevy into the fifth position.  Brandon Hall maintained his sixth position.  Bobby Casselberry rebounded from his earlier spin to make his way up to seventh.  Jay Robinson Jr. was seventh followed by Davis who wanted to make his way back up to the top five.   On lap 50, Day’s Chevy slammed into the turn three wall due to a broken trailing arm.  Day would walk away and receive an applause from the packed stands as he walked down the front stretch toward his motor home.  Frankie Martin would make a quick trip to the pits giving up the third position to Hansard.  Brandon Hall would also move into the top five for the first time, taking over the fourth position. Bobby Castleberry also moved into the top five as his car looked strong enough to maintain the fifth spot.

On the restart, Letson was able to move several car lengths away from Oliver and Hansard to show the fans he had the strongest race car.  Davis and Martin followed each other through the field to make their way up to fourth and fifth.  On lap 75, Martin used a lap car to pass Davis on the back stretch.   Martin looked to take away the third position from Hansard as they battled for several laps.  Martin finally made the pass to make his way up to the third position.  Lap after lap Letson maintain a four to five car length advantage over Oliver and Martin.  Hansard and Davis rounded out the top five.  On lap 91, a rear end cover and gear came off Bobby Castleberry’s car on the front stretch to bring out a caution.  Castleberry’s night would be over as he parked his car behind the pit wall.

The caution was not what Letson wanted to see as he knew he would have to have a perfect restart to keep Oliver at bay.  On lap 92, Letson was able to move away from Oliver and Martin who tangled, sending Oliver’s Chevy spinning along the front stretch.  Both drivers were sent to the back of the field which allowed Hansard and Davis to move into the second and third positions.  The green flag was waved again as Letson moved several car lengths away from Hansard and Davis.  Letson would not be challenged again as he took the checkered flag for his first victory of the year.  Lee Hansard powered his way to a second place finish to maintain his second place in the championship standings.  Nathan Davis finished a strong third after spinning out earlier in the race.  Fourth place went to Brandon Hall who stayed out of trouble and ran a smart race.  Chase Oliver finished fifth but still sits thirds in the championship standing.  Frankie Martin finished sixth after starting the race from the rear of the field.

In victory lane, Jeff Letson wanted to thank his car owners, Ronald and Lisa Grider, for giving him such an awesome race car to drive. Letson also wanted to thank his sponsors Performance South/Lynch Tree Service/Ron’s Insulation.  Letson said his car was strong last week in Huntsville when he finished second to Mark Day.  "Ray Holmes, our chief mechanic, worked on the car to make it fast this week and thanks to Auto Sport Race Engines for giving me the power to run up front the past two weeks. " Letson went on to say, Starting up front really helps you're here at Sayre, so you have to have a really good qualifying lap so you’re up front when the green flag is thrown."

Lee Hansard was happy with a second place finish even though "we don’t come to the track to finish second." Hansard said his car get stronger as the race goes on as evidenced by his finishes this year. “I’m due for a win because it’s been too long since my last win."

Nathan Davis said he was happy with the third place finish because he had to fight his way from the rear of the field a couple of times.  Davis said he would like to thank his sponsor Postens Overhead Doors.  “It’s nice to have a top three finish in front of the home crowd.”

CHASE OLIVER IS KING OF THE MOUNTAIN

Article by John Stephens | Photos by Chuck Chamblee

For Chase Oliver, winning the 2009 Southern Superstars Rookie of the Year Award was huge, but winning his first race in the Southern Superstars Series last weekend at Huntsville Speedway may be his biggest accomplishment in his young racing career. Oliver, who will graduate high school Thursday night, received an early graduation present--- a six foot trophy that says winner of the King of the Mountain 100. In victory lane Oliver was congratulated by all of the drivers in the series. Several drivers have been racing twice as long as Oliver has been alive, but Oliver has earned their respect as a young, clean, hard-nose driver.

Eighteen super late models showed up at Huntsville Speedway to battle it out on the ¼ mile high-banked track that has produced a different winner every time the Southern Superstars has visited there. Veteran driver Keith Cahela set the fastest time in qualifying with a fast lap of 12.70 in his Big Ed Fireworks/ Boaz Tax Service sponsored Chevy Impala SS. Brad Lemley turned the second fastest lap in his Window World sponsored Chevy Impala SS. Clay Alexander starting his first Southern Superstars race turned the third fastest lap in his Alexander Automotive/Red Line Oil/Aramark/Landrum Performance Springs Chevy Impala SS. Chase Oliver showed he had a strong car by turning the fourth fastest lap in his Chevy Impala SS sponsored by Walk About Flooring/Boaz Motorsports/Little Lots/H&H Land/BPI Media Group. Mark Day was fifth in his Scoggins Race Parts/Whitt’s Bar-B-Q/Ron Fox Photos Chevy Impala SS. Chris Horton in his first start in the series turned the sixth fastest lap in his Monte Carlo sponsored by K C Racing Graphics. Scott Dunn was the fastest Ford as he qualified seventh in his NNACDC/R&R Graphic Ford Fusion. John Henegar Jr turned in the eighth fastest lap in his Jet Pep Chevy Impala SS. Qualifying ninth was Rossville Georgia’s Bobby Castleberry in his Southern Air Freight/Great Southern Engineering Monte Carlo. Alabama’s own Johnny Brazier from Lick Skillet qualified a disappointing tenth in his Ford Fusion. As luck would have it, Keith Cahela rolled a four which put Chase Oliver on the pole with Clay Alexander on the outside of row one.

Once the green flag waved, it did not take a lap for the a pile up in turn four to stop the race---Clay Alexander, Brad Lemley, Mark Day, Bobby Castleberry, and Scott Dunn tangled up and it ended the night for Clay Alexander, whose car suffered major right-side damage. Alexander was upset as he exited his race car and walked into his hauler because he had a strong car capable of winning the race. Mark Day’s Chevy also suffered major damage, but he was able to continue. Brad Lemley, Bobby Castleberry and Scott Dunn were also able to continue without much damage. The race was restarted once again allowing Keith Cahela to move to the outside of Chase Oliver on the front row. On the restart, Cahela was able to show everyone his qualifying lap was for real as he took the lead down the back straightaway. Oliver followed in behind Cahela and rode his bumper for several laps until caution waved again for Bobby Castleberry; he had problems as his hood flew up over his windshield making driving impossible. Castleberry had to stop and wait on the inside of the track until everyone passed him; he then drove his car back into the pits where his crew removed the hood. Castleberry lost two laps while the leaders passed him in the pits. On the restart, Brad Lemley drove into the pits with a blown engine, ending his night. Cahela showed his domination as his started lapping car after car. Oliver followed closely behind in second with Chris Horton in third. Mark Day was fourth, with Scott Dunn rounding out the top five. On lap sixteen, Lee Hansard and Russell Smith, another series newcomer from Kentucky, got together bringing out the caution. Both drivers were able to continue but had to move to the back of the field for the restart. On lap 21, Cahela once again pulled away from Oliver and Horton. Cahela caught the rear of the field catching on Lee Hansard entering turn one. Cahela slid up the track hitting the rear of Hansard's Chevy; it sent both cars sliding in front of the field. Both drivers were sent to the back of the field opening up the door for Chase Oliver’s big night.

Oliver wasted no time showing the other drivers this was his race to lose. Oliver continued to lead until he was challenged by Chris Horton on lap 52. Oliver was able to fend off the challenge from Horton and pulled four car lengths away. Scott Dunn had the top Ford in the field moving up to third. Veteran driver Johnny Brazier, driving the Moore’s Auto Paint/We Finance Auto Sales Ford Fusion had a car that appeared to get stronger and stronger each lap as he made his way up to fourth. The surprise for the race appeared to be Phil Renfroe driving a Chevy Impala SS sponsored by Performance South. Renfroe made the most of each lap, passing several strong cars to move up to fifth place.

Oliver, seeing the laps click off, knew the veteran drivers were waiting for a caution or a mistake to catch back up and challenge him for the win. Oliver’s worst fear came true on lap 96 when Phil Renfroe made a daring move under Brazier and Horton. As Renfroe attempted to make the pass, Renfroe touched Horton, causing Renfroe to spin out exiting turn four. The crash allowed Brazier to move up to second, giving the veteran driver a shot at the win. Keith Cahela and Russell Smith each made the most of their strong race cars moving up through the field to find themselves with a shot at the win. Oliver would take the green flag followed by Johnny Brazier, Keith Cahela, Russell Smith, Lee Hansard, John Henegar Jr., Mark Day, Frankie Martin, Chris Horton and Phil Renfroe rounding out the top ten. Johnny Brazier was able to stay door to door with Oliver, but Oliver was able to outdrive Brazier exiting turn two and pull away by three car lengths. Brazier found himself being challenged by Cahela as both drivers entered turn one. Cahela slid up the track just enough to touch the side of Brazier’s car, sending both drivers around in front of the field. John Henegar Jr., Frankie Martin and Mark Day were also caught up in the wreck. Russell Smith was able to avoid the spinning cars and move his way up to second for the last restart.

On the final restart on lap 97, Oliver was able to pull away from Smith and take the checkered flag to the ovation of his hometown crowd. Smith finished second, followed by a great run by Lee Hansard in third. John Henegar Jr. recovered to finish fourth, followed by Mark Day in fifth. Chris Horton was able to pass several cars on the last two laps to finish a respectable sixth. Phil Renfroe finished seventh, followed by Johnny Brazier and Keith Cahela; Frankie Martin rounded out the top ten.

In victory lane, Oliver was met by his parents who shared hugs and celebrated. Oliver wanted to especially thank his parents for giving him the opportunity to pursue his dream of racing. Oliver said, "Without my parents, I would not be the person I am today." Oliver also wanted to thank his sponsors, Walk About Flooring/Boaz Motorsports/Little Lots/H & H Mobile Home and Land Sales/BPI Media Group. Oliver said the last three restarts his engine started sounded a little funny, like a rocker arm was going bad: "I was hoping that last restart was going to be the last, because my engine may not have made it another lap." Russell Smith was happy to finish second in his first start in the series after starting the race sixteenth. Smith said he had a great time, but his car was so loose if "I had tried to make a pass on Oliver, I might have wrecked us both, that is if I could catch him! Sometimes it’s better to take second place than not finish at all." Third place finisher Lee Hansard was happy for a third place finish in his HGC Consultants Chevy Impala after nearly going a lap down early in the race. John Henegar Jr. rebounded from an early spin and a late crash to finish a strong fourth.

The top two drivers in points had their own problems during the race. Mark Day was involved in a couple of wrecks causing his Scoggins Auto Parts/Whitt’s Bar-B-Q/PWR Construction/Lynch Tree Service Chevy to overheat. Several trips to the pits fixed the problem and allowed him to finish fifth, maintaining his series points lead. Frankie Martin driving the Fritz Clinic/Hills Foodland/Jones Tire and Battery/Kevin Bennett Motorsports Dodge Charger stayed in the top ten despite fighting a broken rear brake line for most of the race. Martin returns to his home track, Sayre Speedway, looking for his first win after finishing second there during the first race of the season.

Southern Superstars Notes

Kevin Bennett Motorsports will be the first team to place two Super Late Models in a Southern Superstars Race this Saturday night, May 29th, at Sayre in the Hall of Fame 100. Gary Sanford Jr. will be driving the #179 Chevy Impala SS while Frankie Martin will continue to drive the #79 Dodge Charger. Gary Sanford Jr., a well known Late Model driver, won three Super Late Model Super Series Championships in a row at BIR. Frankie Martin is a veteran driver who hasn’t driven a Super Late Model in fifteen years, but so far he looks like he never stop driving one. Kevin Bennett said his sponsors make it possible for him to run two Super Late Models. "When you have great sponsors like The Fritz Clinic (located in Homewood), Alabama Hills Foodland (located in Pleasant Grove), and Jones Tire and Battery (also located in Pleasant Grove), it gives you the opportunity to compete with the best. We will continue to build our race team and hopefully win a Southern Superstars race very soon. We’ve been close, finishing second several times, but the competition is so even." Kevin Bennett said the Southern Superstars Short Track series has grown so much from last year. "Without Southern Superstars founder B J Parker and race director Ray Tennison, we would have to travel a long way just to be able to race every weekend. The car count has continued to get bigger each race which is a result of the winnings paid out each race has attracted a lot more drivers. Right now Frankie is second in points and having Gary driving the second car will be an added bonus."

MARK DAY BLASTS HIS WAY TO VICTORY IN THE ROCKET CITY!

By John Stephens

Drivers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama descended upon Huntsville Speedway to trade paint on Huntsville’s ¼ high-banked race track.  In qualifying, Mark Day from Clarksville, Tennessee, won his second pole in a row as he laid down a fast lap of 12.758 seconds.  Hueytown, Alabama’s John “Boy” Wilkinson was able to turn in the second fastest lap in qualifying with a time of 12.875.  Rounding out the top five in qualifying were Scott Dunn, Keith Cahela, and Brad Lemley.  The top two qualifiers were inverted, putting Wilkinson on the pole with Day to his outside in second.  Row Two consisted of Scott Dunn third and Keith Cahela fourth.  Brad Lemley started fifth and Heath Hindman was sixth.

A field of fifteen Super Late Models took the green flag Saturday night on the ¼ mile high-banked Huntsville Speedway. On lap number one, rookie driver Hunter Spivey from Decatur, Alabama, crashed hard into the turn one wall bringing out the caution.  The race was red flagged as Spivey’s #10 Chevy Impala was towed from the track.  Spivey said the brakes locked up on his car as he headed into turn one, sending him careening head-first into the wall; Spivey said the crash was the hardest lick he has ever taken in a race car.  He said he was thankful to be standing here talking to everyone.  Spivey credited the safety equipment installed in his car as the reason he walked away from his destroyed race car.

Once the green flag waved again, John  ”Boy” Wilkinson and Mark Day battled door to door for the first five laps.  Wilkinson kelp his Chevy on the bottom while Day took the high groove. Wilkinson was able to take the lead down the back stretch with Day glued to his back bumper.  Scott Dunn, Brad Lemley, and Keith Cahela rounded out the top five.  On lap seven, Keith Cahela who was running strong in fifth place, spun out coming out of turn four to bring out a second caution.  On lap ten, the green flag waved again, but the restart was far from perfect as Harvest, Alabama’s Brad Lemley’s # 189 crashed into the back of Day causing the hood to crumple up on Lemley’s Chevy Impala.  Lemley said he raced for several laps without being able to see over the damage hood.  Heath Hindman from Signal Mountain, Tennessee, took advantage of Lemley's and Day’s mishap to take over second place.  On lap eighteen, Scott Dunn’s Ford Fusion had engine trouble, bringing out another caution which was just what Brad Lemley needed; Lemley was able to bring his car into the pits to repair the damage without losing a lap.  On lap twenty-seven, Wilkinson led the field to the green flag followed closely by Hindman, Day, and Johnny Brazier.  Day and Hindman battled for several laps until Day was able to push his way past Hindman for second place.  Day once again set his sights on Wilkinson who looked strong in his Chevy. Day was able to put pressure on Wilkinson, but could not make the pass.  Wilkinson’s Chevy looked very loose coming off the corners.  On lap thirty-eight, a caution was waved due to oil in turn four; several cars were sideways coming out of turn four.  John “Boy” Wilkinson headed to the pits for a quick adjustment, handing the lead over to Day.  It was a lead Day would not give up for the remainder of the race.

Once the oil was cleaned up, the green flag waved again on lap thirty-nine with Day in front followed closely by Hindman in his Chevy Monte Carlo.  Johnny Brazier, who had worked his way up through the field, was third in his Ford Fusion.  Lee Hansard from Tyron, Georgia, moved up to fourth in his Chevy Monte Carlo.  McCalla, Alabama’s Frankie Martin settled his Kevin Bennett Motorsports Dodge Charger into fifth place.  On lap fifty-two, Lemley moved his way past Martin into fifth place, setting his sights on Hansard.  Wilkinson moved up to seventh where he and Martin put on a great show for the fans.  Lap after lap Wilkinson made it under Martin but just could not get past Martin.  On lap eighty-one, Wilkinson had the rear end of Martin’s Charger sideways in the air coming off of turn four.  In a show of sportsmanship, Wilkinson backed off the gas in an effort not to spin Martin into the inside wall.  The fans really seemed to enjoy the hard racing between Martin and Wilkinson.  Several fans stated that what they love about short track racing is that’s the best racing they’ve seen in a long time!

Things began to heat up near the front as Brazier used the lap car of Jonathan Storm to take over second place from Hindman on lap 90.  Brazier was able to move away from Hindman and start closing the gap on Day who was a half straight away lead.   Heath Hindman and Brad Lemley battled for third place for several laps before Lemley made the pass to take over third place. On the final lap Brazier was able to get his Ford Fusion to the back bumper of Day’s Chevy but could not make the pass as Day took the checkered flag.

After the race an exhausted Mark Day climbed out of his # 8 Chevy Impala with a smile on his face.  Day said, “I have to be honest with you; all these other race cars must have been bad because my car was really bad!"  Day said his car was so loose he hit the front stretch wall twice on consecutive laps.  Day went on to say the brakes on his car went away with twenty laps to go, making it tough to get around the race track.  Johnny Brazier, who finished second in his # 71 Ford Fusion, said he just ran out of time.  Brazier stated, “I was trying to save my tires so I could make a charge but just ran out of time.  The new American Racer EC31 tires just did not have the forward bite I was hoping for."  Brazier laughed and said," I was peddling my car as fast as I could!  My spotter told me to be smooth, but it’s hard trying to be smooth when you’re trying to catch the leader."  Brazier said he was going to celebrate at Night Moves because “this is the first time I’ve loaded up a car up with all of the fenders on it in a long time”!  Brad Lemley said it would have been interesting at the end if he wouldn't have had to make the pit stop to repair his hood.  Charging back through the field made it hard to catch the leaders, but my car was strong tonight.

Official finishing order - Huntsville Speedway

1st Mark Day Clarksville, TN,  2nd Johnny Brazier Lick Skillet, AL, 3rd Brad Lemley Harvest, AL, 4th Heath Hindman Signal Mountain, TN , 5th Lee Hansard Tyron, GA,  6th Frankie Martin McCall, AL,  7th John Wilkinson Hueytown, AL, 8th Bobby Castleberry Rossville, GA,  9th John Henegar Jr. Scottsboro, AL,  10th Jonathan Storm Woodvine, KY,  11th Chase Oliver Crossville, AL,  12th Jay Robinson Jr. Athens, AL,  13th  Keith Cahela Boaz, AL, 14th Scott Dunn Morgan City, AL, 15TH Hunter Spivey Decatur, AL.

MARK DAY WINS EARLYBIRD 100 AT SAYRE SPEEDWAY

By John Stephens

Saturday night in Sayre Alabama, the Southern Super Stars Short Track Series opened up the 2010 season with an exciting 100 lap race.  Fourteen Super Late Models thundered around the famed ¼ mile banked oval.  Drivers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia joined the Alabama drivers to put on a great show for the packed stands.

Mark Day from Clarksville Tennessee set a new track record in qualifying 12.59 shattering the old record of 12.69 set by Andy Antinoro last year.  The staring field was inverted which meant 2009 Rookie of the Year winner, Chase Oliver would start from the pole.  Alongside Chase Oliver would be a series new comer by the name of Dakota Stroup who traveled  all the way from Kentucky.  The second row consisted of Frankie Martin starting 3rd and Georgia driver Lee Hansard on the outside starting 4th.  2009 Series Champion John “ Boy” Wilkerson would start 5th and to his outside would be the Mark Day.

The green flag waved and the 2010 season was underway, but not for long as Dakota Stroupe spun into the outside wall exiting turn 2, making his SSS debut short lived.  Also involved in the crash was Lee Hansard, Edwin Gurley and Frankie Martin.   The race was red flagged while Dakota Stroupe’s Chevy was towed from the track.  Edwin Gurley tried to repair his Chevy, but too much right side damage ended his night.  Edwin stated “ I just haven’t had much luck the last two races at Sayre”!  The green flag was waved again and the Early Bird 100 was underway.  Lee Hansard was able to race his Chevy deep into turn 1 and take the lead coming out of turn two, but Chase Oliver was not going to give up the lead that easy.  Hansard and Oliver battled door to door down the back stretch heading into turn three.  Lee Hansard was able to make his way out front coming out of turn 4 and set a very fast pace.  John “ Boy” Wilkerson moved up to third place followed by Pole Winner Mark Day.  Lee Hansard was able to lead for the first ten laps until John “ Boy” Wilkerson made an exciting pass exiting turn two to take the lead.  Mark Day followed Wilkerson to take second place.

Wilkerson set a blistering pace and begin to lap slower cars.  As Wilkerson entered turn 3, the slower car of Lonnie Watson slid up the track causing Wilkerson to spin out in front of the field.  Mark Day was able to avoid Wilkerson and take first place heading back to the yellow flag.  Wilkerson headed to the pits to check his car for damage.

The green flag waved once again with Mark Day leading the field.  Following closely behind Day was Oliver, Hansard,  Nathan Davis and Frankie Martin.  Day was able to take his Chevy a straight away lengths from Oliver.  Frankie Martin was able to move up through the field to third place setting his sights on Oliver.  Around lap 55, Martin was able to get a nose under Oliver entering turn 1.  Exiting turn 2, Martin and Oliver tangled sending Oliver spinning in front of the field.  Chase Spadlin making his Super Late Model debut was unable to avoid Oliver as he exited turn 2.  Spradlin’s Chevy crashed head on into Oliver ending the night for both drivers.  Both cars suffered major damage, as both drivers were able to walk away  thanks to the safety equipment installed in all of the race cars.

Once the green flag waved, Mark Day was able to pull away from Wilkerson and Martin.  Martin was able to keep Wilkerson in his sights as the two battled for second place.   On lap 90, Martin was able slide his Dodge under Wilkerson’s Chevy and take over second place.  Wilkerson made several attempts to slide back under Martin, but just did have the power to complete the pass.  Mark Day took the checkered flag followed by Frankie Martin  and John “ Boy” Wilkerson.  Rounding out the top five was Booby Castleberry forth and Nathan Davis in fifth.  Lee Hansard finished six after leading the first ten laps.

The series switched to a new tire for the 2010 season.  The American racer replaced the Hoosier 2045.  After the race, several  drivers stated they were impressed with the tire’s durability and handling.  Many of the drivers said they could have raced another 100 laps on the tires.

The Southern Superstars head to Huntsville Speedway for a 100 lap race on April 17th.  Look for a large number of Super Late Models to show up to race on this ¼ high banked super fast track.
